Santiago isn’t a planning city?
When we see in google Earth the extension
of Santiago we could be impressed of the large areas of only residential use,
like condominiums or private villages in the periphery of the city, that have a
few of public services and are very far from the downtown and the principal
activities that the city offers.
First, despite of the “tranquillity” what
offers the houses in the suburbs, to live in this areas of the city means more
hours in the public transportation for arrive to work or even remoteness of the
programmatic and recreational activities of the city, what finally ends isolating
people in their square meter, also of the fatigue and stress what causes moving
long distances and what force people to use the car, for being the only
transport what could cover this zones, because the public transportation, the
most of time, don’t have service to the periphery.
Above mentioned is a reality what happens
in a lot of districts of Santiago, and this zones are the most economically accessible
for people in our city. So the most of people in Santiago go through for this
situation day after day, and it’s for that what we need design or redesign the
city follow a model of compact city with mixed use what is close of public spaces
and of different alternatives of public transportation.
Finally we need rethink the conception of
our cities for ameliorate the quality of life of the persons.
